Report shows positive results from initial 11,000 CMS hospital-at-home patients

The more than 11,000 patients who received care during the first 16 months of the Acute Hospital Care at Home initiative had a low mortality rate and minimal complications related to escalations back to the brick-and-mortar hospital, according to a study reported Friday in JAMA Health Forum. CMS launched the initiative in November 2021 to address the COVID-19 public health emergency and concerns about hospital bed capacity. The Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2023 extended the CMS initiative through December 2024. Please click here to read more.

McKinsey reports on the gathering storm: The threat to employee healthcare benefits

A recent article by McKinsey & Company looks at the coming impact of inflation and other factors that could significantly raise annual employer healthcare costs and impact vulnerable household finances. The once-in-a-century pandemic thrust the healthcare industry into the teeth of the storm. The combination of accelerating affordability challenges, access issues exacerbated by clinical staff shortages and COVID-19, and limited population-wide progress on outcomes is ominous. This gathering storm has the potential to reorder the healthcare industry and put nearly half of the profit pools at risk. Those who thrive will tap into the $1 trillion of known improvement opportunities by redesigning their organizations for speed-accelerating productivity improvements, reshaping their portfolio, innovating new business models to refashion care, and reallocating constrained resources. The healthcare industry has lagged behind other industries in applying these practices; players who are able to do so in this crisis could set themselves up for success in the coming years. FAU College of Nursing launches two new nursing certificates

Consortium member Florida Atlantic University’s Christine E. Lynn College of Nursing has launched two new continuing education certificate courses designed to train health care professionals and caregivers on compassionate care of persons with dementia and nurses caring for patients in telemetry/progressive care units. “Compassionate Care of Older Adults at Risk for or Experiencing Dementia,” is a fully online, self-paced, on-demand six-week program for certified nursing assistants, home health aides, patient care assistants and caregivers. The 20-hour course certificate program integrates the “The Six Cs of Caring,” in all its components so that participants gain an understanding and the true meaning of caring as well as new skills to apply – when caring for individuals at risk for and/or experiencing symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias (ADRD). “Telemetry/Progressive Care,” in partnership with Consortium member Cross Country Healthcare, is a fully online, self-paced, on-demand 10-week course designed for registered nurses, advanced practice registered nurses, and licensed practical nurses, and is open to the general public. This 35-hour course is a virtual learning certificate program that will increase the understanding and clinical judgment of nurses when caring for patients with health conditions that require them to be admitted to the telemetry/step down/progressive care units. The caring science principles of competence, compassion, comportment, confidence conscience and commitment are woven throughout the video and written content of each module.
