respondents say their organizations are using gen AI regularly in at least one
business function. Amid recent advances, AI has risen from a topic relegated to
tech employees to a focus of company leaders: nearly one-quarter of surveyed
C-suite executives say they are personally using gen AI tools for work, and
more than one-quarter of respondents from companies using AI say gen AI is

More nurses needed to help
run the healthcare business
America needs more nurses. Not just nurses to help
patients, but especially nurses to run the business. A recent article in
MedPageToday by Joel Theisen, BSN, RN, who is a nurse, founder and chief executive
of Lifespark, a Minnesota senior health company, stresses the importance of
getting nurses into senior management positions in the healthcare industry.
Theisen says, “I have attended meetings too numerous to count with executives
who define medicine by dollars and cents. Their view of healthcare is through
spreadsheets, profit-and-loss statements, and claims management metrics. Nurses
are different. We aren't all about numbers. We are wired and trained to focus
on people -- what people want, what people need, and how we can make their
lives better. To borrow a phrase from the business world, nurses are
customer-driven. I believe that encouraging nurses to work the business side
of healthcare can serve as a motivator that keeps good people in the healthcare
profession -- and makes the overall industry better, too. Please click here to

McKinsey interviews Zeynep Ton about her new book on how
great companies empower employees and reduce turnover
McKinsey & Company’s Global Publishing Editor Elissa
Bandler interviews Zeynep Ton, professor of the Practice at the MIT Sloan School of Management and president
and cofounder of the Good Jobs Institute about her new book, The Case for Good
Jobs: How Great Companies Bring Dignity, Pay, and Meaning to Everyone’s Work
(Harvard Business Review Press, June 2023). Ton’s book examines the positive
impact of targeted job strategies on performance, productivity, and profit. Ton says that she found two approaches to profitability. The
dominant approach was to see employees as a cost to be minimized and to invest
very little in people over market pay. Consequently, this means operating with
high employee turnover. Companies that use this approach worked in ambitious
cycles where their high turnover led to lots of operational problems, customer
service problems, reduced productivity, reduced sales, and more. The other,
less used approach was to see people not as a cost to be minimized, but as the
drivers of value, profit, and customer service. In that case, the goal was to
invest heavily in them—pay a lot more than the market wages and operate with
very low turnover. These companies also made employees’ work a lot more
valuable to more than pay for the investment in them. They operated in a cycle
of low employee turnover and high performance. Please click here to read more.

KaufmanHall reports hospital financial outlook stable but
challenges persist
Despite an overall trend of continued margin improvement,
most hospitals underperformed in June as high expenses and economic pressures
persist, according to the latest data from Kaufman Hall. The median calendar
year-to-date operating margin index for hospitals was 1.4% in June, with fiscal
year-end accounting adjustments contributing to a slight bump in performance,
according to findings in the latest National Hospital Flash Report. As margins
continue to stabilize on the surface, the gap between high-performing hospitals
and those struggling in this new financial environment is widening. Please click
